Design With the Climate, Not Against It

Penang is hot, humid and often salt-laden, especially along the coast. Monsoon rains, strong afternoon sun and sea air quietly test every material in a home. Beautiful interiors that ignore this reality can warp, stain or smell musty within a few seasons. Great tropical design starts with climate and ends with beauty.

Let the Breeze Do the Work

Natural ventilation is the cheapest cooling system you will ever install. The principle is cross-ventilation: openings on opposite or adjacent sides so air passes through the home. Where possible:

• Align doors and windows to create a clear airflow path.
• Use louvred or adjustable windows that let air in during rain.
• Add high-level vents or clerestory windows so hot air can escape.
• Consider a ceiling fan paired with air-conditioning to raise comfort at a higher thermostat setting.

In condos, glass sliding doors, balcony screens and well-planned layouts can still improve air movement.

Block the Heat Before It Gets In

The west-facing wall and roof take the heaviest heat load. Deep eaves, external screens, pergolas, timber slat shading and heat-reflective glazing reduce solar gain before it reaches the interior. Light external colours and well-insulated roofs help landed homes. Inside, light-filtering curtains and sheers soften glare without cutting daylight.

Choose Materials That Cope With Humidity

Moisture is the real enemy. We favour:

• Porcelain or sintered stone in place of materials that absorb water.
• Moisture-resistant plywood, quality laminates or solid timber that is properly sealed and treated, instead of cheap particleboard.
• Breathable mineral paints and good waterproofing in bathrooms, balconies and planter areas.
• Stainless steel or powder-coated hardware that resists corrosion, especially near the coast.
• Good ventilation inside wardrobes and cabinets, using vented panels or slim gaps to prevent musty odours.

Indoor-Outdoor Flow

Island living is about blurring the boundary between inside and out. Wide sliding or folding doors, covered patios, and a garden or balcony garden connected to the living area create space that feels larger and cooler. Use the same flooring tone indoors and out, with weather-appropriate materials, to visually extend the room. Plants like areca palm, bird’s nest fern and frangipani add shade and humidity balance.

Manage Water on Purpose

Penang’s heavy downpours demand proper falls, concealed drainage, waterproofing membranes with testing and well-sealed joints. These are invisible when done well, and very visible when done badly. We document the waterproofing process and test before finishes go on, so you can see what is behind the walls.

顺应气候而设计，而非与气候对抗

槟城热、湿，沿海地带还带有盐分。季风雨、午后阳光和海风，默默考验着家中的每一种材料。忽略这些的美丽室内设计，可能在几个季节后就出现变形、污渍或潮味。好的热带设计，从气候出发，以美观收尾。

让微风替你工作

自然通风是最经济的降温系统。关键是对流通风：在相对或相邻的两侧设置开口，让空气穿过室内。可以这样做：

• 让门窗对齐，形成清晰的气流路径。
• 采用百叶窗或可调节窗扇，下雨时仍能进风。
• 增设高位通风口或高侧窗，让热空气排出。
• 将吊扇与冷气搭配使用，在较高温度设定下仍感到舒适。

即使在公寓里，玻璃推拉门、阳台屏风和合理格局，也能改善空气流通。

先把热量挡在门外

朝西的墙面和屋顶承受最多热量。深屋檐、外部遮阳屏、花架、木格栅以及反热玻璃，可以在阳光进入室内前就减少热量。浅色外墙和隔热良好的屋顶对有地房屋尤其有帮助。室内则可用漫射窗帘和纱帘柔化眩光，同时保留自然光。

选择耐湿气的材料

湿气才是真正的“敌人”。我们偏好：

• 瓷砖或岩板，取代吸水的材料。
• 防潮夹板、优质贴面板或实木，经过封边与处理，而非低价碎木板。
• 透气矿物漆，并在浴室、阳台及花槽区域做好防水。
• 不锈钢或粉末喷涂五金，尤其在靠海地区更耐腐蚀。
• 衣柜与橱柜内部保持通风，采用透气板或细缝，避免霉味。

室内外连贯的生活方式

岛屿生活的精髓，在于模糊室内与室外的界线。宽大的推拉或折叠门、有顶的露台，以及与客厅相连的花园或阳台花园，会让空间显得更大、更凉爽。室内外使用相近色调的地面，并选用适合户外的材料，可以在视觉上延伸空间。槟榔、鸟巢蕨和鸡蛋花等植物可以增添遮阴并调节湿度感。

有计划地管理水

槟城的大雨需要正确的排水坡度、隐藏式排水、经过测试的防水层和密封良好的接缝。做得好时看不见，做得不好时却一目了然。我们会在饰面施工前记录并测试防水工程，让您看到墙面背后的真相。
